Ummay Shahera Anika, born in 1988 Jurain, Dhaka. Eldest child of parents. I completed my SSC from Dhanmondi College of Development Alternative (CODA) in 2003, HSC from Holycross College in 2005 and Honors and Masters in Political Science from Eden Mohila College. In 2012, I was working as a manager in a fashion house. I grew up watching and wearing my mother’s sarees. Hence, I developed a love for boutique from a tender age. Although I worked as a teacher from 2013 till 2019, I decided to change my career and became an entrepreneur. I decided to work with Bangladeshi Batik. In 2019, I started my entrepreneurial journey in August 2019. At the very beginning of my journey as a Batik item seller, I received guidance from Razib Ahmed, the Founder President of e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB).
Ever since I started selling Batik items online, I wanted to introduce Batik products in a different manner which led me to make Batik sandals. It was a very unique product. Since I started working with native batik, I noticed that there are common misconceptions and one such is Batik clothes are cheaper. To end this misconception, I have been regularly writing about about exclusive Batik of Indonesia, Japan, China, Egypt, Malaysia, India and other countries from my Facebook page and online news portal. Batik artists of Bangladesh are creating art with their work. Unfortunately, Bangladesh’s Batik industry is lagging behind for the lack of necessary publicity and promotion. Along with cotton silk Batik clothing gained popularity online in the last two years. In addition to Batik clothes, buyers also like to buy bags and shawls. I have been very successful at selling Batik items to expatriate Bangladeshis as well. Aside from regular dresses, I designed muslin Batik wedding saree and orna which was also very new in our country. I am trying to re introduce Batik products in a new way to local people. In this regard, my Batik sandals helped me a lot. Many people liked this product and the feedbacks I received from my customers further motivated me. e-Commerce Development Center has been established to regularly publish quality content on local products as well as conduct research and survey on a regular basis and disseminate information to people. In addition, this organization will assist various public and private organizations dedicated to the development of the e-Commerce industry.
Economic aspects of e-commerce
The government is always working to build a digital Bangladesh, and its sole purpose is to take the digital country forward. E-commerce can achieve this goal of the government. Because the rate of online money exchange for e-commerce is increasing. E-commerce will play an important role in advancing the country’s economy. Due to e-commerce, it is possible to change the internal market system of the country. In particular, e-commerce of domestic products will serve as one of the sources of income in the national economy. E-commerce can accelerate the country’s economic development, including the establishment of export-oriented industries, product diversification, market expansion, and job creation. As a result, it is possible to reduce unemployment as well as increase national growth. So we have to come up with our own views on how e-commerce can work for the economic development of the country and take it to the policy-making level.
